The Merchant Daughter Fairy Tale Romance Series Melanie Dickerson Books

Melanie Dickerson's debut novel was The Healer's Apprentice. Finding Hope Book Club read it and loved it so much they voted her newest novel The Merchant's Daughter for their January 2012 book club pick. The club had the privilege of having Melanie speak to the group in person! I was thrilled to receive a review copy of Melanie's book which is loosely based on The Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.

Annabell volunteers to become an indentured servitude to Lord Ranuif Wyse, who doesn't have a good reputation and they call him beastly looking because of an accident that left him disfigured. But Annabell's family has broken the law and someone had to pay.

Annabell fears for her virtue and feels if she can't be a nun in a nunnery to better grown in her faith and be free from Bailiff's vile behavior becoming an indentured servant was better than marrying the man. She wanted to marry for love not for money.

Annabell is desperate to read the bible for herself. She can't believe the preacher's sermons. Surely all the bible was about more than doom and gloom. She stays after to talk to the pastor and asks him to see his bible. The preacher is insulted and can't believe a woman would ask him such a thing. Didn't she realize women weren't supposed to read the bible for themselves?

Annabell feels comfortable with Lord Ranuif Wyse to ask about the preacher and the sermon. Lord Ranuif Wyse confirms that there is definitely more in the bible than doom and gloom. He's read the bible for himself and there is much more. He's also not surprised that this pastor doesn't have a bible of his own to read.

Annabell says, "She should have known! A man who preached this kind of sermon could not even know what God's word said. He doesn't have a bible. The unfathomable words went through her mind over and over. The man who proposed to teach her God's will did not even have a bible." Scandalous!

It was fascinating to hear Melanie talk about this aspect of her book and the time period in which she wrote about. Everyone was just as surprised as Annabell.

Annabell then gets even more courage to ask Lord Ranuif Wyse another question. "You asked me what I want most. What I want most is to read the bible. For the past three years I have wanted to be a nun, to study the Holy word and take my vows."

She can't believe the worlds that just came out of her mouth. She remembers what the preacher said to her, "What makes you think you can read the bible? Don't you know you're not supposed to be thinking .. You think you know something about God I don't?...You're just a woman Annabell Chapman.. Nobody wants to her what you think. You're no Priest, and you don't know God, so just shut your mouth."

Life in Medieval village times in the mid-1300's England didn't think highly of women thinking for themselves as you just read. This book was fun entertaining and connected with the fairy tale story so well.

This is what Melanie says, "I've always loved the classic Beauty and the Best story in which the characters fall in love with each other's inner beauty in spite of outward appearances. I also wanted to explore how it would feel to desperately desire to read the bible, and to finally get the opportunity to read it for the first time."

This author does an amazing job of doing just that. There are several passionate moments in this story we all loved and reading about someone reading the word of God for the first time was one of them. Well done Melanie. I highly recommend this book for book club. There's so much to talk about!!

I’m thankful for the review copy of a book that answers the question, “What does it mean when someone says; God has healed me from the inside out? How can I let God touch the hurts in my heart and be healed?”

Denise says, “You can only live with your heart shut down for so long. Eventually you will fight for your healing or you will die… Some even find God when their lives fall apart!....Sometimes a person has to die in order to really live. ..Hungry for something real?.. (tired of just going through the motions of life and feeling numb inside?) Want to feel alive? Seek whatever helps you rediscover that carefree childlike heart I know is in there somewhere – that is what you should be doing to Feel Alive!”

This is a walk Denise’s characters have gone on and/or just started down the path. I enjoyed this cast so much, they are fun, bold and each have been knocked around by life. Each has a different result and story to tell.

Scarlett Jo is a Pastor’s wife that’s fun and doesn’t care what people think about her. Denise writes, “Scarlett Jo hadn’t simply survived her life. She had learned how to live in spite of it- and not to worry too much about the perceptions of others.”

Scarlett Jo is fun loving, free spirited and an inspirational person! I loved her voice and her outlook on life she says, “Oh, child do you not know about couponing?...I’m feeding a pack of wolves at my house. If I didn’t know how to coupon, my children would have had to eat me by now. But if you ever want to learn how to do it, you just let me know. It is crazy girl! I can go to a store and leave and they’ve paid me money.” (I want to learn – teach me! Teach Me! Grin!)

The characters in this novel welcome you in as family. They’re situations will tug at your heart. What I love about Denise’s books are this, you’ll be having a good time reading then all of a sudden she cleverly interweaves spiritual truths that pierce your heart, make you stop and think. Denise will help you “See lies you believe.” You’ll laugh out loud and get teary eyed in parts of this story, a winning combination.

I really liked Scarlett Jo’s husband too he says, “I watch people. I take in people. And to be honest, I learn a great deal about them by what they don’t say.”

I highly recommend this novel and the non-fiction companion book called Reclaiming your Heart! It’s a win win combination. A book you’ll want to put on your summer reading list. Did I mention I just love the cover of this book too! It’s a keeper!

The Merchant Daughter Fairy Tale Romance Series Melanie Dickerson Books Reviews

When the new lord, Ranulf, comes to the demesne, Annabel is made his indentured servant to pay for her family's laziness; their complex relationship is further complicated when troublesome Bailiff Tom is injured.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting 5 -- Plot has many unique elements, no major holes, and a sense of focus. This is a beautiful, believable retelling of the 'Beauty and the Beast' story, with the added wonder of someone who seeks God experiencing the joy of reading the Bible for the first time. Suspenseful, romantic, and thoroughly enjoyable. Setting is clear, believable, and consistent. The timeline is easy to follow, and I enjoyed the interesting details about what life and law and justice were like in 1300's England.

Characters 4.5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. A lot of wonderful depth and realism to both Ranulf and Annabel, in their pain and joy and confusion. Some minor characters have depth, while others may be slightly stereotyped or simplified. Villainous characters (Tom, Maud, Annabel's family) are fairly one-note, while we get more complex and interesting looks at others, like the coroner. Definite strong points in the relationships between characters. I especially enjoyed how the coroner slyly collected clues about the relationship between Annabel and Ranulf, and Stephen.

Mechanics and Writing 5 -- Few, if any, typos or word errors. One typo (in the very first line!), and 3 spots where paragraph breaks aren't quite right. That's all! Intelligent use of POV (Annabel and Ranulf). Skillful writing that adds to the story. Not to mention obviously well-researched.

Redeeming Value 5 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Annabel learns that the local priest doesn't even own a Bible, but her deep desire to read God's word is met through Ranulf--and she takes joy in learning a true picture of God through the Word. She also overcomes her fear, through faith and love. Ranulf and the coroner learn that mercy and love can sometimes supercede justice, and Ranulf releases some long-held bitterness and lets himself feel loved by God and Annabel. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all, though present both Annabel and Ranulf are faced with violent attacks and unwanted sexual advances and/or accusations of sexual impropriety, though it avoids becoming graphic or crude.

Personal Enjoyment 5 -- I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. One I'll definitely read again.
