A little over a year ago, this was my first foray into romance novels, and what an introduction!!!The plot is unusual and very interesting; the characters are well-developed; a poignant story, beautifully conceived and written. All this, and a bit of history, as well! PW *really* did her homework.
I smiled. I laughed. I cried. I sighed. And, at times, I was a nervous wreck.
This book didn't need an epilogue; I wrote my own. McCady and Jessalyn are still living with me. (It's that kind of book. Enduring.)
After this amazing experience, I happily wandered into the world of 19th century romance, expecting to find several books in the genre of equal quality. Well...NO. What drudgery...wading through fluff after fluff; no plots, silly plots, boring plots; flat characters; inane dialogue; tawdry sex substituted for actual *writing* skills; and authors who wouldn't recognize the period they're writing about if it hit 'em..
This, on the other hand, is a heart-wrenchingly beautiful, satisfying love story.

Once in a Blue Moon Penelope Williamson 9780440211082 Books Reviews
Ms. Williamson has quickly become one of my favorite authors. She has this great ability to spin her books to life. She can write such wondrous heart warming stories of love, loss, faith, acceptance, and much more. The kind of passion between Jessalyn and McCady is not something that you encounter very often and it will linger in my mind for years to come. This book is definitely a keeper and one I plan to read many times.
I have to agree with all the rave reviews. This book has it all...great plot, great characters, great setting. I loved the wonderful descriptions of the coastline, the races, the mines, the locomotives, all beautiful and believable.
P. Williamson's books are all so down to earth. The situations in her books could happen to me or anyone else. She sees life as it is in different times and I like her characters because there is no falsness, just human.
Very sweet emotional ride. This is the second book I read by Williamson and she definitely knows how to write a book that tugs on your heart strings. I felt the connection and reasons of why and how Jessalyn and McCady fell in love. At times I found myself in awe of their love for one another and then upset at how McCady was always turning her away from him. Yes, he believed it was for her own good, but at the same time he couldn't keep away from her. Only when he was truly going to lose her did make a move to ensure she would be his. *sigh* I just wish he hadn't hurt her so many times over and wish she had more pride. I felt she sacrificed so much for him and everything he did was for himself. I wanted him to redeem himself, to make the readers understand that he did deserve Jessalyn. However, the book ended abruptly therefore the author leaves it to the reader to assume their happily ever after. *shrugs*
I also enjoyed other characters in the book. Becka, I found myself laughing at her misusing words. Emily, I couldn't help but like her and feel sorry for her. And then Clarence... Yes, I even like Clarence. In the beginning he was created to be a likeable character and then he turns into a villian which was kind of hard to believe.
All in all, this is not a book to be missed if you enjoy emotional romance books.
This is a really good book that deserves more popularity!! McCady is a "bad boy" sort of hero, but with honor. Jessalyn or otherwise known as Jessa fell in love in McCady when she was only 16 years old. McCady was in love with her too, but could not bring himself to admit it, because he could not debauch such a young innocent. In addition, he had dreams and goals that he wanted to accomplish. As part of a long line of impoverished Trelawny earls, he felt he did not deserve Jessa. He coldly rejected her admission of love, because he thought she would be better off without the Trelawny influence. Thus, he went away to fight a war and did not come until years later.
Five years later, they meet again and the feelings they had for each other are stronger than ever before.Jessa and McCady are very vivid characters. Read this! You will not be disappointed! In my opinion, this is the best work of Penelope Williamson. Also check out the following
1) Lions & Lace - Meagan McKinney
2) A Rose in Winter - Kathleen Woodiwiss
3) His Lady Mistress - Elizabeth Rolls
4) Gabriels's Bride - Samantha James
5) Luciens Fall - Barbara Samuel
5) The Devils Desire - Laurie McBain
6) The Pride of Lions - Martha Cansham
7) Magic Embrace - Jennifer Horsman
8) The Tempest A Guy of Gisborne Story - Charlotte Hawkins
9) Wicked Loving Lies - Rosemary Rogers
10) No Gentle Love - Rebecca Brandewyne
Although I really enjoyed "The Outsider" I really liked this one better.
Some of the other readers gave it a bad review because of some of the events that happened that make you want to despair. That is one of the things that made it such a good book is because you couldn't see how the situation could right itself. (I am being vague so I don't "spoil" it for the readers.)
It is a good book that will keep you on edge. Highly recommend it!
A long story that made me sigh at times due to the H&H unable to get their HEA when *I* wanted it, but I truly loved both characters. Yes, there is a lot of heartache in this novel, but also a lot of love and passion. I liked that this was a solid story in a different vein than the 'normal' romance story; that being the Hero was trying to fulfill his vision and dream of a world of steam engines and railroads. He was full of honor and pride and duty. The heroine was full of love, patience and sacrifice. Both very good for each other!
Very much worth taking the time to read and enjoy!
